چکیده

We present new, more precise measurements of the mass and distance of our Galaxy’s central supermassive black hole, Sgr A*. These results stem from a new analysis that more than doubles the time baseline for astrometry of faint stars orbiting Sgr A*, combining two decades of speckle imaging and adaptive optics data. Specifically, we improve our analysis of the speckle images by using information about a star’s orbit from the deep adaptive optics data (2005 2013) to inform the search for the star in the speckle years (1995 2005). When this new analysis technique is combined with the first complete re-reduction of Keck Galactic Center speckle images using speckle holography, we are able to track the short-period star S038 (K-band magnitude = 17, orbital period = 19 years) through the speckle years. We use the kinematic measurements from speckle holography and adaptive optics to estimate the orbits of S0-38 and S0-2 and thereby improve our constraints of the mass (Mbh) and distance (Ro) of Sgr A*: Mbh = 4.02±0.16±0.04×106 M and 7.86±0.14±0.04 kpc. The uncertainties in Mbh and Ro as determined by the combined orbital fit of S0-2 and S0-38 are improved by a factor of 2 and 2.5, respectively, compared to an orbital fit of S0-2 alone and a factor of ∼2.5 compared to previous results from stellar orbits. This analysis also limits the extended dark mass within 0.01 pc to less than 0.13×106 M at 99.7% confidence, a factor of 3 lower compared to prior work. With 10 years of high-resolution imaging data now available on the stellar cluster in the Galactic Center, we present proper motions for >40 stars at projected distances ≤ 1.2 ′′ from Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*). We find evidence on a ≥ 2σ level for radial anisotropy of the cluster of stars within 1 ′′ of Sgr A*. For a brightness limit of K ∼ 15.5 we find no evidence for a stationary source at the ...

Masses of Nearby Supermassive Black Holes with Very Long Baseline Interferometry

Dynamical mass measurements to date have allowed determinations of the mass M and the distance D of a number of nearby supermassive black holes. In the case of Sgr A*, these measurements are limited by a strong correlation between the mass and distance scaling roughly as M ∼ D2. Future very long baseline interferometric (VLBI) observations will image a bright and narrow ring surrounding the sha...

Congenital Primitive Neuroectodermal Tumor (PNET) of the Orbit

Purpose: To report a case of the congenital primitive neuroectodermal tumor (PNET) of the orbit. Case Report: The patient was a 2-week-old neonate referred to the oculoplastic clinic with right eye proptosis from birth. The neonate was a full term with a history of difficult vaginal delivery. At an initial examination, the ecchymosis of the medial right upper lid was noted. At an initial CT sca...

Sgr A* Companion S0-2: A Probe of Very High-Mass Star Formation

The star S0-2, which is orbiting Sgr A* with a 15-yr period, almost certainly did not form in situ. We propose that it was injected into this close orbit by the tidal disruption of a massive-star binary, whose primary was more massive than S0-2 and at least 60M⊙. From numerical integrations we find that 1-2% of incoming binaries with closest approach equal to 130AU leave the secondary in an orb...

We simulate the observations of proper motion of stars very close to the Galactic Center. We show that the speckle interferometry done with the Keck II telescope is accurate enough to obtain orbital parameters for stars with the period P ∼ 10 y during ∼ 10 seasons of astrometric observations made once a year. The determination of a single orbit will give central mass estimate with the typical u...
